Il compte parmi les écrivains anglais les plus populaires du XIXe siècle. Ses œuvres les plus célèbres restent David Copperfield, Un chant de Noël (A Christmas Carol en anglais) et Oliver Twist.

Regarded as the greatest novelist of his generation, he was also a campaigning journalist and philanthropist who helped to change the world in whicw he lived. he died on 9 June 1870 at the age of 58. On Queen Victoria's insistence he was burried at Westminster Abbey in Poets' Corner.
