As shown on these maps, Latvia is a country in the Baltic region of Nothern Europe. Latvian was independent once from 1919 till 1940 and then was part of the USSR. At the fall of the Soviet empire in 1991 Latvia was independent again. A first set of 8 stamps as been issued in October 1991. You can see two ot these stamps on the cover :
To complete his sending, Juris has added a 1997 stamp celebrating the centenary of the city of Ventspils, an important ice-free port on the Baltic Sea.
At last, a stamp issued in 2011 depicts the coat of arms of Smiltene, a 5,000 inhabitants city in the north-east of Latvia.
