Janis Pommers.

 Le 12 octobre 2016, la poste lettone a émis 200 000 exemplaires de ce timbre à 0,50€ consacré  à Janis Pommers, le premier archevêque letton de l'Eglise orthodoxe de Lettonie. Le christianisme est la religion largement dominante en Lettonie puisque plus de 80 % des lettons se déclarent chrétiens même si moins de 10% sont pratiquants. Les trois grandes religions chrétiennes (protestants, catholiques et orthodoxes) sont représentées à parts à peu près égales (entre 20 et 30%) même si le protestantisme (luthéranisme) reste la religion la plus importante, proximité des mondes scandinaves et germaniques oblige.  Thank you Juris for this cover with a 0,50€ stamp dedicated to Jānis Pommers (1876-1934), the first Latvian Archbishop of the Latvian Orthodox Church, serving from 1921 to his assassination in 1934. He was also involved in politics, and was the leader of the Party of the Orthodox. To note that the largest religion in Latvia is Christianity (80%), though only about 7% of the population attends religious services regularly. Lutheranism is the main Christian denomination among ethnic Latvians due to strong historical links with the Nordic countries and Northern Germany, while Roman Catholicism is most prevalent in Eastern Latvia, mostly due to Polish influence. The Latvian Orthodox Churchis the third largest Christian church in Latvia, with adherents primarily among the Russian-speaking minority.
